Adoption
What About Making an Adoption Plan?
The adoption process has changed dramatically over the last few decades. At one time, due to the stigma of unplanned pregnancies, a woman had no idea who adopted her child or where they went.
Today’s adoption process is very different. Now, the expectant mother or birth mother can select the adoptive family who will raise her child. She determines the future she hopes her child will have.
Although choosing to place your child for adoption is not easy, understanding the process and your rights is essential to knowing if adoption is your best option.
What Is Adoption?
Adoption is the legal process of adoptive parents assuming the rights and responsibilities of raising a child who is not biologically theirs. It is not co-parenting. The child becomes a permanent member of their adoptive family.
You Have Rights
Whether you are currently pregnant and considering your options or you have already given birth, you have rights when you choose adoption. Here are some of your rights to consider:
- To have the adoption process thoroughly explained to you.
- To freely consider this option without manipulation.
- To receive all adoption services free of charge.
- To review several couple’s profiles and select the couple who will adopt your child if you wish.
- To determine the adoptive couple’s involvement at the hospital.
- To receive counseling before, during, and after finalization.
- To select the type of adoption plan: open, semi-open, or closed. The adoption plan you choose determines the amount and type of contact you have with the adoptive family and your child.
- To create a contact agreement with the adoptive couple.
- To have the freedom to change your mind at any time until you sign official paperwork.
